Emotional Intelligence and Changing Your Heart
So why does changing your heart matter when talking about emotional intelligence? A study was done where people report feeling their emotions mostly around or in the heart region. When we become aware of the body & mind & body relationship we find our emotions show up around the heart.
Science of the Heart
At the center of many different wisdom traditions the heart is one of the central reference points for healing, transformation and accessing a higher intelligence. The heart is not just an organ in the body and has some very interesting characteristics. Our heart actually has over 40,000 different neurons and has its own memory system. It sends more energy to the brain than the brain sends to it. Its electromagnetic field is 5,000 times bigger than the brain.
By practicing heart techniques your heart will be stronger, more efficient and can reduce heart issues. It also has a healing power, sends out a vibrations that can heal and be picked up by other’s brainwaves. When we learn to quiet the mind and center in our hearts research has shown that we become more intuitive and develop right brain functioning. Our right brain is the eagle in the sky or higher self and our left-brain is the logical or organized part of us.
So when we elicit positive emotions and felt in the heart many people create a particular heart rhythm called coherence or balance. Heart-Coherence or psychophysiological Coherence is the balance of both the parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system. When we feel positive emotions like compassion, forgiveness, and gratitude and of course love the heart gives off a different heart rhythm that can be measured by heart rate monitors (aka biofeedback).
Coherence research indicates that balancing part of our Nervous system creates higher performance, happiness and optimal health. Negative emotions can negatively impact these three areas and have a negative impact on our heart’s rhythm. When our heart rhythm is off it can also negatively affect the rest of the body.
Positive emotions create increased harmony and coherence in heart rhythms and improve balance (coherence) in the nervous system.
- Disharmony in the nervous system leads to increased stress on the heart & organs.
- Harmonious rhythms are more efficient and less stressful to the body’s systems.
Heart Frequencies & Emotional Intelligence
When we talk about changing your heart, your heart has the unique ability to move to a higher frequency which informs our EM field, but also balances our physical, mental and emotional systems. In one particular study of heart-coherence scientists, R. McCraty, W. A. Tiller, and M. Atkinson measured heart rate variability (HRV), respiration and electro-encephalograph (EEG) recordings for 5 subjects. These subjects were trained a specific technique to attain heart-coherence and when these subjects applied the technique they reached coherence.
Both the rest & digest and fight or flight branches of the autonomic nervous system, shift their power into the mid frequency range (~ 0.1 Hz). The scientists used a HRV power spectrum; which is associated with the baroreceptor feedback loop between the heart and brain. This means that they are measuring the vibration of the heart as it increase from its average .07Hz range to a higher frequency of .1 Hz when the heart technique is applied. This study, along with many others, suggests that the heart sends more signals to the brain then the brain sends to the heart.
How do we become more Emotionally Intelligent?
Well, when the heart moves up in frequency it has a positive effect on the brain through the heart-brain connection. By generating positive emotions and use certain breathing exercises the heart becomes more coherent. It also communicates to the brain; which influences thoughts, behavior and overall health. This is the heart of Mindfulness Training and a result of this training is becoming a more Emotionally Intelligent person.
