Use your heart to center your breathing and balance your emotions to produce more energy. Are you saying that we can gain energy from our emotions? Yes, ever feel exhausted and drained after an intense conversation or after a frustrating situation? This due to our emotions and how they effect the body. Emotions produce a lot of neuro-activity in your nerves and nervous system which impact the body in very powerful ways. Therefore, emotions can be thought of as energy in motion.
At the center of many different wisdom traditions the heart is one of the central reference points for healing, transformation and perhaps accessing a higher intelligence. The heart might just be an organ in the body but it also has some very interesting characteristics. Our heart actually has over 40,000 different neurons and has its own memory system. It sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to it. The heart’s electromagnetic field is 5,000 times bigger than the brain, which could mean that it has more of an effect on our body, mind and how we perceive the world then we previously thought.
A study was done where people report feeling their emotions mostly around or in the heart region. When we become aware of the body & mind & body relationship we find our emotions show up around the heart. This seems to indicate that the heart is the center of our emotions and plays a big role in how emotions are felt in the body. Emotions affect the heart and its healthy rhythmic beat, which this beating is a form of energy that we measure through EEG or the heart rate variability. A healthy HRV or energy of emotions tells the body to open up blood vessels, relax, calm the nervous system: it strengthens the muscle of the heart and even sends the brain new signals.
Science of the Heart
So when we elicit positive emotions and felt in the heart many people create a particular heart rhythm called coherence or balance. Heart-Coherence or psychophysiological Coherence is the balance of both the parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system. When we feel positive emotions like compassion, forgiveness, and gratitude and of course love the heart gives off a different heart rhythm that can be measured by heart rate monitors (aka biofeedback).
Coherence research indicates that balancing part of our Nervous system creates higher performance, happiness and optimal health. Negative emotions can negatively impact these three areas and have a negative impact on our heart’s rhythm. When our heart rhythm is off it can also negatively affect the rest of the body.
By practicing heart techniques your heart will be physically stronger by increasing the nuero-connections in the organ itself, this makes the heart more efficient and can reduce heart rate by 49%. It also has a healing power, sends out a vibrations that can heal and be picked up by other’s brainwaves. When we learn to quiet the mind and center in our heart, research has shown that we become more intuitive and develop more creativity.
Changing Your Stress Response
Positive emotions create increased harmony and coherence in heart rhythms and improve balance (coherence) in the nervous system. Your body is like a battery and you need to reset and recharge it through breathing and practicing generating and feeling positive emotions. Our response to stress can be the body and mind’s way of coping or handling stress. If your stress response is disharmony you have developed a habit for the mindset of stress. However, we can change our bodies stress response through practice and re-programing the heart-brain connection.
- Disharmony in the nervous system leads to increased stress on the heart & organs.
- Harmonious rhythms are more efficient and less stressful to the body’s systems.
How to Change Your Heart and balance the nervous system
- Develop a Formal Resilience Practice (guided imagery and breathing techniques)
- Mindfulness Practice
- Practice Exercises for Gratefulness, Compassion, Altruism, Joy or Loving-Kindness
- Making choice to take responsibility for your habits and health- Wisdom, Faith, Vision, Write your own story and be optimist and creative
Heart Frequencies, The Heart of Resilience
When we talk about changing your heart, your heart has the unique ability to move to a higher frequency which informs our EM field, but also balances our nervous system, makes our the organ stronger and changes our brains.
Well, when the heart moves up in frequency of its rhythms, it has a positive effect on the brain through the heart-brain connection. By generating positive emotions and use certain breathing exercises the heart becomes more coherent. It also communicates to the brain; which influences thoughts, behavior and overall happiness and well-being. This is the heart of Resilience and a result of this training is becoming a more emotionally Intelligent, healthier and just fun to be around.
